Reaching Out to Underserved Communities

The Action Alliance is committed to services and access to services for traditionally underserved groups including women of color; lesbian/gay/bi/trans/queer communities; Latinas; older women; teens and children; people who are deaf; women with mental illnesses; women with disabilities; people of faith; women who are incarcerated or criminally charged, and others.

Groups within the Action Alliance include the Social Justice Task Force; the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Questioning (LGBTQ) Task Force; the Women of Color Caucus; and the Women of Faith Subcommittee. The “Break the Silence” Public Awareness Campaign includes outreach to the African-American community and to faith communities. Action Alliance staff conduct outreach and public awareness in the Hispanic community in Spanish. Staff also participate in older battered women’s projects and encourage local facilitation of support groups on domestic violence and sexual assault in jails. The Action Alliance continues to support the Virginia Teen Alliance and has established a partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University to improve the criminal justice system response for victims with disabilities.

The Action Alliance also offers on-site technical assistance to local Sexual and Domestic Violence Agencies wishing to improve access. We can facilitate strategic planning meetings or collaboration meetings between Sexual and Domestic Violence Agencies and potential community partners. We can assist with Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, how to use a TTY, Deaf culture, providing culturally appropriate services to women of color and Latinas and reaching out to the LGBTQ communities.
